Örvar Smárason

Örvar Smárason is a poet, writer, composer and musician. He is one of the founding members of the band múm in addition to playing with bands such as FM Belfast and Singapore Sling. Örvar has published the novella Úfin, strokin (Ruffled, stroked) and the book of poems Gamall þrjótur, nýir tímar (Old villain, new times). In 2022, he published his first collection of short stories, Svefngríman (The sleeping mask), which received a grant from the Center for Icelandic Literature. In it, Örvar mixes absurdity with everyday life: a man loses a toe at his local pool, a pilot drinks her last cup of coffee before the end of the world, and a young man works a shift at the rectal museum. The short story Sprettur from the collection won first prize at the Júlíana Festival.
