The Prime Minister, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, awards Elif Shafak the Halldór Laxness International Literary  Prize for the second time. The prize is awarded to internationally recognized authors for contributing to a renewal of the narrative tradition, which were the grounds for awarding Laxness himself the Nobel Prize in 1955. Upon accepting the award, the author presents the Halldór Laxness lecture.

The selection committee for the awards included Ian McEwan, winner of the Halldór Laxness Literary Prize in 2019, First Lady Eliza Reid and Stella Soffía Jóhannesdóttir, director of the Reykjavík Literary Festival.
