Alexander McCall Smith CBE was Professor of Medical Law at the University of Edinburgh before he became a full-time author.<\/span><\/p>\n

He has written and contributed to more than 100 books, including specialist academic titles, short story collections, stand alone novels, and children\u2019s books. His various series of books have been translated into over 46 languages and have been sold in more than 30 million copies across the world. These include <\/span>The No. 1 Ladies\u2019 Detective Agency<\/span><\/i> series, set in Botswana; the <\/span>44 Scotland Street<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Isabel Dalhousie<\/span><\/i> novels, set in Edinburgh; the <\/span>Professor von Igelfeld<\/span><\/i> series; and the <\/span>Ulf Varg<\/span><\/i> novels, set in Sweden.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>44 Scotland Street<\/span><\/i> series, first published in The Scotsman newspaper, is now the longest running serial novel in the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Alexander has also written a number of stand-alone novels and short story collections, including <\/span>My Italian Bulldozer;<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span>Fatty O\u2019Leary\u2019s Dinner Party; Trains and Lovers; The Second Worst Restaurant in France; Tiny Tales<\/span><\/i>; <\/span>Chance Developments<\/span><\/i>,<\/span> and <\/span>The Pavilion in the Clouds. <\/span><\/i>He has also authored many non-fiction titles, such as <\/span>A Work of Beauty: Alexander McCall Smith\u2019s Edinburgh <\/span><\/i>and\u00a0<\/span>What W.H. Auden Can Do For You<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2007 Alexander received a CBE for services to literature, and was honoured in 2011 by the President of Botswana for services through literature to the country. In 2017 he was the recipient, in New York, of\u00a0the\u00a0National Arts Club Annual Medal of\u00a0Honour for achievement in literature.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alexander is the co-founder of an amateur orchestra called \u2018The Really Terrible Orchestra\u2019, in which he plays the bassoon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
