The novel is autobiographical and describes the events in the life of the author when his partner, Karin, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia when she was 33 weeks pregnant with their firstborn. Their daughter Livia was born via C-section but Karin was dead within a week. The authors father died a few months later – also from cancer.

In Every Moment We Are Still Alive has taken the literary world by storm and was an overnight success in Sweden. The book has received various awards and nominations – the Karin Boys Literary Prize in 2015, the Dagens Nyheter Culture Prize (2016) and was nominated for the Nordic Council’s Literature Prize in 2016. The publishing rights have been sold to many countries.
